Getting started

Updated Apr 23, 2026

You can be tracking time and generating your first invoice in under 5 minutes. Here's the path.

1. Create an account

Go to app.logforme.com, click Sign up, enter your name, email, and a password.

LogForMe will send you a verification email - click the link inside to activate your account. (If the email doesn't show up, check spam; you can also click Resend on the verification screen after 60 seconds.)

Before you start tracking, spend 30 seconds in Preferences (link in the sidebar):

  • Default hourly rate - what you usually charge. You can override this per Time Frame later.
  • Currency - e.g. USD, EUR, EGP.
  • Week start - Monday, Sunday, whatever matches how you think about your week.
  • Round durations (optional) - if you want all logged time rounded to the nearest 15 minutes, set it here.
  • Invoice branding - your name/studio name, address, and an accent color that'll appear on your generated invoices.

You can always change these later.

3. (Optional) Set up your standard tax

If you charge a VAT or sales tax, set it up once in Taxes (sidebar link) and check Enabled by default so it gets auto-attached to every new Time Frame. See taxes.md for the full explanation of compound / inclusive / etc.

4. Create your first Project

From the home screen (Projects list), click Create Project. Give it a name - typically your client's name or the project name. Save.

5. Create a Time Frame inside the Project

Open your new Project. Click Create Time Frame.

A Time Frame is a billing period - the thing that eventually becomes one invoice. Examples:

  • "Acme - March 2026"
  • "Landing redesign - Sprint 3"
  • "Q1 retainer"

Fill in:

  • Start date / end date - the window this Time Frame covers.
  • Hourly rate - defaults from your preferences; override if this client has a special rate.
  • Currency - defaults from your preferences.
  • Taxes - any taxes marked "default" are pre-checked; add or remove as needed.
  • Status - start as in_progress. Flip to done when you're ready to bill.

Save.

6. Log some time

You're on the Time Frame detail page. Three ways to log an entry:

  1. Type it - click Create Entry, fill in the times, save.
  2. Run the stopwatch - click the stopwatch button (or hit Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+S), start, pause when done, then Convert to Entry.
  3. Speak it (AI) - click the microphone (or Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+V), say something like "worked for an hour on the login page, billable," stop, confirm. (Paid plans only - unavailable in the Community Edition.)

See entries.md for the detailed entry flow, and stopwatch.md / verbal-entries-ai.md for those features specifically.

7. Generate the invoice

When the period is done, open the Time Frame, flip its status to Done, and click Get Invoice.

A branded PDF opens in a new tab. Download it, email it (or use the in-app email feature on paid plans - see invoices.md), and get paid.

Next steps

  • Read core-concepts.md so the hierarchy (Projects → Time Frames → Entries) clicks in your head.
  • Learn the keyboard shortcuts if that's your speed.
  • Configure your taxes properly - especially if you're in a jurisdiction with compound taxes. taxes.md.
